Greg Reis is FOR’s River Restoration Hydrologist. He has worked on restoring rivers and improving flows below dams for almost 30 years. He serves on the San Joaquin River Restoration Program’s Technical Advisory Committee, focusing on implementation of the historic settlement that rewatered the long-dry river. He was with the Bay Institute for 12 years and has served on the steering committee of the California Water and Environmental Modeling Forum.
Greg grew up not far from the Los Angeles River, and spent his teenage years rafting the Kern River. In college he surveyed and studied San Luis Obispo’s creeks and interned with SLO County implementing CEQA. After college he spent every moment possible climbing the peaks of Yosemite and floating the creeks of the Eastern Sierra. He lived and worked for the Mono Lake Committee in Lee Vining for 16 years where he coordinated the canoe program for two summers, and was also a volunteer firefighter/EMT. He now works for FOR and continues to work for MLC from the Bay Area, where he has a Coho salmon stream in his backyard.
Greg holds a B.S. degree in Forestry and Natural Resources with a concentration in Environmental Management from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He is endlessly fascinated by natural processes, especially interactions between water, soils, and plants, and how to minimize our impacts on the environment.
