The River Activist Leadership Initiative (RALI) seeks to serve the environmental justice community, the environmental NGO community, and the larger environmental movement by growing new leaders to expand capacity in California water policy. The fight to protect the environment and restore our watersheds takes place across hundreds, if not thousands of legal and regulatory policy processes which govern how dams, reservoirs, groundwater stores, hydroelectric plants, flood control, water rights, diversions, contracts, allocations, and conveyances, are operated in California. We need to fight both the multitudes of policy battles and at the same time engage hearts and minds on a statewide and local scale. The RALI program experiences will enable participants to begin contributing rapidly where needed, and to help grow the movement we need to protect and restore our rivers.

Guide Activist Training: June 2-4, June 30-July 2, July 21-23, 2023

FOR is bringing back our annual whitewater guide training this summer. This will be a Guide and Activist Training to equip participants with the skills they need to safely take people down rivers and build FOR’s base of activists. You’ll build and strengthen your leadership abilities, gain competence on the river, and learn how to save rivers all at the same time.

Through our Guide Activist Training, you will learn how to help others appreciate healthy rivers, enjoy camping and cooking together, learn to read the current, maneuver a paddle boat, and conduct yourself and others safely, while respecting the environment. This training will also incorporate important policy and advocacy topics. This means you will learn from a broad range of experts about grassroots organizing and river protection. This is all part of FOR’s work to build a more powerful river protection movement in California by training and mentoring the next generation of river advocates.

Cost: $750, scholarships available.
