The River Program is the fun part of being a Friend of the River. We celebrate free flowing sections of California Rivers that have been protected by FOR and our partners over the past 50+ years. We have 20+ river guide volunteers supporting rafting trips that enable river lovers to experience the pure joy of splashing through white water or floating in sinuous current surrounded by beautiful riparian habitat.

The FOR River Program also leads river trips for organizations that collaborate with us in policy work to enable rivers from high Sierra watersheds to flow free as they used to for thousands of years through the mountains and valleys of California and into San Francisco Bay. We restore rivers by guiding our friends through tricky whitewater rapids to plant a variety of native trees in riparian zones adversely affected by dams and climate change.

Our highly certified river guide trainers have been conducting guide schools for decades. Graduates have utilized these river skills and leadership in river advocacy to start environmental non-profits, engage in civic leadership, and high level education in California water politics.
